Beetorbman

While others are busy raiding tombs, you shuffle over to the corners of the room, trying to see out the beetles that seemed so intent on gouging your eyes out just moments ago. You reckon with your experience wrangling the orbs, this couldn't be much harder, right? The Orbs are supernatural entities with some vague level of sentience and communicate almost exclusively in human swear words, at least the beetles are firmly bugs.

And bugs aren't that hard to squish when things go bad.

Not that you would want to squish a bug, given what happened last time with the Orb.

Or do you?

You shake your head thinking about what the fuck kind of softie have you become, thinking about the morality of killing bugs. You used to not bat an eye when thousands of people died, let alone one orb.

As you let an existential crisis consume you, you see something shiny and black flicker at the corners of your vision. The beetles must still be scurrying around from the trap that sprang on you guys before.

Only how to lure them out?

You fish out some old coffee grounds from the bottom of your orb-coffee-filter-brewing-canister. As you open it to stick your hand in, deep and urgent cries of “OH NO FUCK WHAT ARE YOU DOING” In a cacophony of different voices all ring out.

“SHUT UP!” You yell

“UP SHUT!” one Orb yells back.

Maybe the remixing of words has gone too far.

You sprinkle old grounds on the floor of Amenken's burial chamber, hoping that the scent attracts these bugs like old coffee attracts cockroaches back home. Only this time you actually want them to come out.

As the beetles start to appear, coming up to sniff the grounds, you see that they actually aren't that big, each about the size of an Orb, like a large golf ball. As more and more appear, a metallic looking golden scarab beetle joins their ranks. It is only slightly bigger, and is more domed at the top than their brethren.

You crouch down, approaching the beetles with the tip of the sword you found, you hope these guys aren't smart enough to realise you stole from the place they're meant to be protecting. As you reach to poke one, the golden scarab beetle's abdomen opens up to reveal a set of papery looking wings. It charges up at you.

“Oh shit it flies!” You yell, tumbling back and screwing your eyes shut.

You expect something very painful to bite you in the nose, or perhaps poison spray you blind. But instead, when you open your eyes you see a holographic force field extended around you, with the underside of the Golden Scarab beetle visible as it crawls over top.

“FLIES are SHIT” You hear from all around you as you sigh in relief. For all the racket the Orbs make, they can sometimes be good for something.

The black beetles begin to follow their leader, crawling up and around the person shaped force field the Orbs have created around you. You can see their mandibles trying to bite into the shield, but they just slide off as if they were trying to bite into a car windshield. Blackness encompasses you as the beetles cover your entire body without you feeling a thing, leaving only a window along your eyes.

You realised that you've become some sort of strange Beetleman.

You try moving, lifting your arm to find that the orb shield moves with you, and so do the beetles. As you walk, you look down to see some Beetles crawling off your shoes only to climb back on in your new position. It's like an impenetrable suit of arthropodic intimidation.

Now, can it attack?

You raise a Beetle covered arm up to a corner of the burial chamber, pointing at Amenken's face with intent to shoot at it like a target, like how you'd do with the Orbs. But instead of Orbs shooting forth this time, black scarab beetles eject themselves from the palm of your hand. Each beetle rides forward into battle on an Orb as they fling themselves onto the wall and gnaw at Amenken's painted face.

You find that with some practice, you can even charge up your shots and shoot large balls of swarming beetles forth at once.

“OH SHIT we all FLY.”

You look down and see that the golden scarab beetle, the leader, has scuttled to the centre of your chest, in its mandibles it gently holds the first orb you ever owned, the one that used to be in a jar. Together, they now command an army of hundreds.

And they all serve you.
