School of Rock: Rock Cave Edition

The rehearsal room – or rather, cave – is a lot emptier than you would have expected for a band with a name as cool as Girls Like Fish, and with leads as charismatic as Heang and Kanna. However, you suspect that the small number of people in this room is not so much due to lack of interest, but due to lack of time. Every day seems to be a busy day at the Well, what with escape plans and deep diving and, now, even a newborn baby. Unfortunately, Girls Like Fish does not seem to be high on the women’s priority list, and you can’t say you’re surprised to see that the Chosen in this room outnumber the actual Well-dwellers present.

After a few minutes of waiting around and socializing with the likes of Saxber, Alexander, and Nancy, Kanna and Heang walk to the centre of the room, where most of the instruments are, and give you all a little welcome.

“Hey,” Kanna starts. “So like, it’s super cool to have you all here. For real, you guys rock. So, um, Heang, would you like to explain how this thing is gonna go?”

“For sure. So, you’re each gonna grab an instrument and… just do your thing. Fuck it! I don’t make the rules!”

She and Kanna laugh.

“Hell yeah,” says Kanna. “Well, that’s pretty much it. But um, before I forget, I just wanted to quickly thank Nancy.”

Kanna points her out in the crowd, and you see her blush a deep red.

“The other day, Nance and I were jamming, and she showed me how sound vibrations coming from music can, like, attract fish. So I’ve, um, I’ve actually been looking into that a little more with a couple others, and recently we discovered that guitar music has that same effect on Besa! Now, if you know me, you know that I, like, really like that fish. Team Save Besa and all. And this whole fish and music stuff really gave me some hope for Besa’s future, yanno? Maybe, if we can get them to approach us during our next concert, we can actually sedate Besa instead of killing them, and like…” You can see Kanna is getting emotional. Heang drapes an arm over her shoulders. “And like, it’s just so cool. So um, thank you, Nance. And thank you everyone.”

“LET’S SAVE THAT FISH!” Saxber screams, and Heang beams at her.

“LET’S ROCK AND ROLL!!” she yells back.

You, too, are equally ecstatic. You know how much Kanna cares about that fish and, if it's really true that it doesn't have to die for the women to live, those are some truly astounding news. You catch her eye, and give her a thumbs up. She finger-guns at you back.

After that, most of the evening goes by in a flash. You can quickly tell that you, alongside most of the Well-dwellers there, are here to spectators, and that the true show is coming from the other Chosen. Saxber fiddles around with a ukulele for a bit and kills it. Meanwhile, Alexander absolutely shreds on bass, and Nancy gives a fantastic drums performance – she is definitely a natural.

You also notice that, at some point, Commander Sarah has arrived, and is having some kind of awkward chat with Heang. What’s that about? After a while, however, Sarah seems to get what she wants and, almost begrudgingly, gets up on stage. She begins with an announcement:

“Hello, everyone. I am here because a friend of mine, who goes by the name of Waffle, is very excited about the upcoming Girls Like Fish concert. So much so that they view it as a party of sorts. So, if anybody would like to help me with it, or with baking a Waffle-cake alongside Heang, that would be great. In exchange for this, Waffle has promised me some… information. So, well, with that out of the way, here is the 25th century Glaswegian byte-core hypno-rock classic, ‘Oyster Slide’.”

Waffle, huh? You thought they hated all adults but… perhaps a party will endear you to them, somehow. That could be nice.

Before you can consider the option further, however, Kanna approaches you while Sarah sings.

“Hey,” she whispers. “So, what are you gonna play?”

“Oh! Well, um, I actually came here to just, like, sorta watch you,” you whisper back. And it’s only after the words are out off your mouth that you realise just how weird you sound. “I-I mean, I’m here to watch Girls Like Fish!” you correct but, to your surprise, Kanna is blushing.

“Aw, man, that’s sweet of you.” Then she stops, thinks, and murmurs: “Hold on, I just had an idea.”

Kanna leaves, and your eyes follow her as she takes Heang by the arm and whispers something in her ear. You see them frown, then turn their gaze to you, and you quickly look away. It’s clear, at least to you, that Heang is not as comfortable in the company of men as Kanna is, but you decide not to look into it further as Sarah finishes her song.

After everyone is done performing, Kanna and Heang take to the stage once more, looking veritably floored.

“Okay, here are the results:” Heang says, “Everybody who auditioned is in.”

You clap good-naturedly, smiling at all your friends – well, at least you think you can call them “friends” by now.

“Yeah, you all rocked. Seriously. It was so cool,” Kanna says. “But anyways, yeah. Now that we’re all here… anyone wanna jam?”

A cheer erupts in the room and… wait did Kanna just wink at you? For a second, your brain ceases to function, and you can only watch while Kanna grabs her guitar and starts performing for the entire room. For the entire room, or just for you? Somehow, you can’t really tell.

Together, you all party until the wee hours of the morning. You are pretty sure you will never forget the lyrics to the songs Kanna sang.
